In previous years, PM Modi’s trips to the US have also facilitated the return of numerous artifacts. In 2021, 157 antiquities were handed over, including a bronze Nataraja statue from the 12th century. Following the PM’s 2023 US visit, another 105 antiquities were returned.
During a recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States, 297 antiquities were handed over to India. This event brings the total count of recovered antiquities since 2014 to 640, with 578 of these coming from the USA.
PM Modi thanked Biden for his support in returning these artefacts, saying: “These objects are not just part of India’s historical material culture, but formed the inner core of its civilization and consciousness.”
